Flugtag, which means“flying day” in German, pushes the envelope of human-powered flight, but competitors need more than airtime to reach the podium. Teams are judged on three criteria: flight distance, creativity of the craft, and showmanship. And after a year with no Red Bull Flugtags in the US, 2010 promises to be bigger and better than ever.
The crowd has spoken! This summer wouldn’t be complete without a Red Bull Flugtag event on the West Coast, so on August 21st, Red Bull Flugtag will splash land in Southern California. Our last flight through LA was 2003. This year, Long Beach’s Rainbow Harbor takes center stage. Flying machines will swarm the skies above these coastal waters in hopes of achieving human-powered flight, and with such close proximity to stars of Hollywood, we’re sure to see some memorable performances.

Mixed Vegetable Pepper Beef
2 pounds boneless beef chuck roast, cut in 1/4″ strips
2 tablespoons peanut or vegetable oil
1 large onion, cut into wedges
1 medium green pepper, julienned
1 medium sweet red pepper, julienned (opt.)
1 cup trimmed green beans, cut into 1 inch pieces
1 cup sliced mushrooms
1 cup broccoli florettes
1 cup cauliflower florettes
1/2 cup sliced carrots
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons peanut or vegetable oil
2 cups beef stock
2 tablespoon Oyster Sauce
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
2 teaspoon cornstarch blended into 1/2 cup water
hot cooked rice
In a large skillet, cook beef in oil until browned, about 4 minutes. Remove meat and set aside.
In the same skillet over medium-high heat, add the 2 tablespoons of oil and stir fry all the vegetables and garlic until crisp-tender. Remove vegetables and set aside. Add stock, oyster sauce, brown sugar, black pepper, and return meat to pan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 35-40 minutes or until meat is tender. Stir in cornstarch mixed into water, and keep stirring until sauce has thickened. Return vegetables to pan, toss to coat, and serve immediately over steamed rice.
BLUEBERRY-PEACH PUDDING CAKE
This delicious cake makes a great summer dessert. Serve this wonderful pudding cake warm with heavy cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- 1 1/2 to 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
- 1 can (15 ounces) diced or sliced peaches, well drained (I’m substituting 2 cups fresh)
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 large egg
- 6 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 cup boiling water
In another bowl, blend flour, baking powder and soda, salt, and 1 cup sugar.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla.
Combine the dry ingredients with egg mixture just until blended. Spoon over the fruit layer and gently spread.Combine the 3/4 cup sugar with cornstarch; spread evenly over batter. Carefully pour the boiling water over all. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes. Spoon into dessert dishes and top with ice cream or whipped topping.
Serves 6 to 8.
Dinner for 4 thanks to shopping sales at Seafood City in Mira Mesa and the 99 Cent Store. Buttermilk Ranch dressing ($.99/bottle) on romaine salad ($.99/3 heads) complementing 5 lbs. of home cooked fried chicken thighs & drumsticks ($.39/lb.) comes to $3.93 TOTAL spent to feed 4 people! However, I say LESS than $.98 per person because: I didn’t use the whole bottle of dressing, all 3 heads of romaine lettuce, and not everyone can eat 1.25 pounds of fried chicken !
Let me start by stating that I am NOT a crystal collecting, chakra balancing, mantra chanting, tie-dye clothed, unshaved armpit, tree-hugging, Vegan Liberal alarmist. That said, I AM a granola-munching, environmentally perturbed, veggie-loving, card-carrying-Republican, Catholic-school-surviving, farmers-market-roaming, bargain-hunting, carnivorous, foodie fanatic. And I’m reading about more and more health risks associated with Aspartame, Sucralose, Saccharin, Acesulfame K, and other sugar substitutes marketed under the brand names Splenda, Equal, Sweet One, Sunett, Sweet ‘N’ Low, etc. Some argue against artificial sweeteners, and others argue against real sugar in your diet. But think about it, you can find expert testimony to uphold ANY argument (example: O.J. Simpson). Personally, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m going to stop using artificial sweeteners, avoid refined white sugar, and use organic raw sugar and/or honey. Because it is more expensive, I will be more conscientious about it’s usage. The articles about refined white sugar also brought up the low-carb, high protein diet fad that promotes unhealthy high fat consumption.
Over the decades, ALL the diet gurus have been proven to be absolutely, positively FULL OF BULLSHIT. Over the LONG TERM, not one of those diets has proven to be a healthy LIFESTYLE! Do you honestly know anyone who has slimmed down to their desired weight and still maintained the weight for 3 years or more on the South Beach Diet, Mediterranean Diet, Atkins Diet, etc.?!? If you are still unhappy with your weight and paying for their more expensive version of food products, aren’t you just fooling yourself into buying that “magic pill” for easier weight loss?!? Deep down inside you are smart enough to realize you are lying to yourself, and this really isn’t good for you!
