Red Bull Flugtag Website:

Red Bull Flugtag challenges the brave and brainy to design, build and pilot homemade flying machines off a 30-foot high flight deck in hopes of soaring into the wild blue yonder…or often, plunging into the waters below.  Flugtag, which means“flying day” in German, pushes the envelope of human-powered flight, but competitors need more than airtime to reach the podium. Teams are judged on three criteria: flight distance, creativity of the craft, and showmanship.  This criteria has inspired flying tacos, prehistoric pterodactyls, winnebagos with wings and even Snoopy and the gang to grace the Flugtag flight decks! And after a year with no Red Bull Flugtags in the US, 2010 promises to be bigger and better than ever.

The crowd has spoken! This summer wouldn’t be complete without a Red Bull Flugtag event on the West Coast, so on August 21st, Red Bull Flugtag will splash land in Southern California. Our last flight through LA was 2003. This year, Long Beach’s Rainbow Harbor takes center stage.  Flying machines will swarm the skies above these coastal waters in hopes of achieving human-powered flight, and with such close proximity to stars of Hollywood, we’re sure to see some memorable performances.

Gates open: 11:00AM, First Flight: 1:00PM, Last Flight: 3:30PM
I VERY HIGHLY recommend you reach downtown Long Beach before 9:00AM to make sure you have a place to sit or stand! I also recommend that even though there will be concession stands, that you bring some snacks, sandwiches, and bottled drinks that don’t require a cooler.

Grocery Outlet
$3 per TWO 12 oz. bags Marquis de Paiva Coffee–
Organic Medium Roast, French Roast, Breakfast Blend, House Blend and Espresso.  This is an awesome deal for certified Organic Free Trade coffee.  The big name brands who spend a lot of money on advertising, cost $5.99 – $8.99 per 12 oz. bag versus this brand selling for $1.50 per 12.oz bag.  I’m guessing brands of coffee package their ground and unground beans in 12 oz. bags  instead of 16 oz. bags because they don’t think you’ll stop and do the math to figure  the cost per pound.

Henrys (BOTH weeks’ ads are honored on Wed.)

Mixed Vegetable Pepper Beef

2 pounds boneless beef chuck roast, cut in 1/4″ strips
2 tablespoons peanut or vegetable oil
1 large onion, cut into wedges
1 medium green pepper, julienned
1 medium sweet red pepper, julienned (opt.)
1 cup trimmed green beans, cut into 1 inch pieces
1 cup sliced mushrooms
1 cup broccoli florettes
1 cup cauliflower florettes
1/2 cup sliced carrots
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons peanut or vegetable oil
2 cups beef stock
2 tablespoon Oyster Sauce
1 teaspoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
2 teaspoon cornstarch blended into 1/2 cup water
hot cooked rice

In a large skillet, cook beef in oil until browned, about 4 minutes.  Remove meat and set aside.

In the same skillet over medium-high heat, add the 2 tablespoons of oil and stir fry all the vegetables and garlic until crisp-tender. Remove vegetables and set aside.  Add stock, oyster sauce, brown sugar, black pepper, and return meat to pan.  Bring to a boil,  reduce heat, cover and simmer for 35-40 minutes or until meat is tender.  Stir in cornstarch mixed into water, and keep stirring until sauce has thickened.  Return vegetables to pan, toss to coat, and serve immediately over steamed rice.
This delicious cake makes a great summer dessert. Serve this wonderful pudding cake warm with heavy cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
  • 1 can (15 ounces) diced or sliced peaches, well drained (I’m substituting 2 cups fresh)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 6 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup boiling water

Spread blueberries and drained peaches in the bottom of a 9-inch square pan or an 11×7-inch rectangular baking pan. Sprinkle with the lemon juice.  Heat oven to 350°.
In another bowl, blend flour, baking powder and soda, salt, and 1 cup sugar.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla.
Combine the dry ingredients with egg mixture just until blended.  Spoon over the fruit layer and gently spread.Combine the 3/4 cup sugar with cornstarch; spread evenly over batter. Carefully pour the boiling water over all. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes. Spoon into dessert dishes and top with ice cream or whipped topping.
Serves 6 to 8.

How does a 1.25 lb. chicken dinner at LESS than $.98 per person for sound?!?

Dinner for 4 thanks to shopping sales at Seafood City in Mira Mesa and the 99 Cent Store.  Buttermilk Ranch dressing ($.99/bottle) on romaine salad ($.99/3 heads) complementing 5  lbs. of home cooked fried chicken thighs & drumsticks ($.39/lb.) comes to $3.93 TOTAL spent to feed 4 people!  However, I say LESS than $.98 per person because: I didn’t use the whole bottle of dressing, all 3 heads of romaine lettuce, and not everyone can eat 1.25 pounds of fried chicken !

Very Simple Guaranteed and Proven Weight Loss Plan!!!

Let me start by stating that I am NOT a crystal collecting, chakra balancing, mantra chanting, tie-dye clothed, unshaved armpit, tree-hugging, Vegan Liberal alarmist.  That said, I AM a granola-munching,  environmentally perturbed, veggie-loving, card-carrying-Republican, Catholic-school-surviving, farmers-market-roaming, bargain-hunting, carnivorous, foodie fanatic.  And I’m reading about more and more health risks associated with Aspartame, Sucralose, Saccharin, Acesulfame K, and other sugar substitutes marketed under the brand names Splenda, Equal, Sweet One, Sunett, Sweet ‘N’ Low, etc.  Some argue against artificial sweeteners, and others argue against real sugar in your diet.  But think about it, you can find expert testimony to uphold ANY argument (example: O.J. Simpson).  Personally, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m going to stop using artificial sweeteners, avoid refined white sugar, and use organic raw sugar and/or honey.  Because it is more expensive, I will be more conscientious about it’s usage.  The articles about refined white sugar also brought up the low-carb, high protein diet fad that promotes unhealthy high fat consumption.

Over the decades, ALL the diet gurus have been proven to be absolutely, positively FULL OF BULLSHIT.  Over the LONG TERM, not one of those diets has proven to be a healthy LIFESTYLE!  Do you honestly know anyone who has slimmed down to their desired weight and still maintained the weight for 3 years or more on the South Beach Diet, Mediterranean Diet, Atkins Diet, etc.?!?  If you are still unhappy with your weight and paying for their more expensive version of food products, aren’t you just fooling yourself into buying that “magic pill” for easier weight loss?!?  Deep down inside you are smart enough to realize you are lying to yourself, and this really isn’t good for you!

There is ONLY ONE DIET that has been proven to work after CENTURIES OF TESTING!  This diet was around BEFORE all these low-fat, low-carb, and sugar-free money-making diet product gimmicks were draining our wallets!  Losing or maintaining a slim figure is NOT EASY, or everyone would be wearing cool, hot-looking skinny clothes!  However, I GUARANTEE this diet is SIMPLE and INEXPENSIVE!!!  I GUARANTEE You will fit into a smaller clothing, weigh less, and be healthier!

If you increase your activity by 500 calories a day and do not increase your eating, you will lose 3500 calories a week, the equivalent of 1 pound. Alternatively, if you reduce your eating by 250 calories per day and increase your activity by 250 calories, it’s still a net loss of 500 calories per day or 1 pound per week.

It’s easier to cut back on calories than it is to burn them off.
4 slices bacon = 500 calories
KFC E.C. 1 thigh + 1 drumstick = 500
Walking 5 miles = 500 calories

  • Eat a healthy balanced diet of carbohydrates, fruits, vegetable, lean protein and some unsaturated fats.
  • Try to limit your intake of processed foods which are full of chemical additives, refined sugar, salt, saturated fats, and empty carbohydrates.  I knew a guy who lost over 20 lbs in 3 months when he stopped buying fast food for lunch.
    Jack’s Ultimate Cheeseburger = 1010 calories
    Jack’s Small Fries = 330 calories
Small Dr. Pepper = 150 calories
  • Increase your fiber with whole grains, legumes, and vegetables.  You will feel fuller on less calories, nourish your body with valuable vitamins and minerals, and it will move the toxins and sludge in your intestines.
  • Eat natural or organic whenever possible. (Studies have proven that the composition of grass-fed beef has higher levels of Omega-3 than grain-fed beef.  Those damn organic tree hugging hippies were right.)
  • Don’t deprive yourself, but allow yourself a small reasonably portioned reward when you’ve done well. (Your reward shouldn’t equal or exceed the weight lost.)

As I said before, I’m committed to using organic raw sugar or honey.  Where my budget allows, I will buy organic vegetables, fruits, food products, dairy, and meats.  I’m going back to having (non-instant) oatmeal for breakfast (since it’s been cold in the morning this summer), and doing more exercise again.  However, I may continue to consume rBGH tainted milk until my breasts swell to the size of Dolly Parton’s before I switch to the organic brands.  Below,  I’ve included links to articles about how additives affect your weight and health.
